How many deck boards do I need?
The answer depends on more than deck square footage. Board width, the gap between boards, board length and the direction you lay the boards all affect how many full boards are needed.
This estimator works course by course: it counts the rows needed to cover the deck, then counts how many boards each row needs based on the selected board length. It adds your waste factor after that raw quantity.
This calculator estimates material quantities only. Actual requirements can vary based on board dimensions, layout, framing design, manufacturer requirements, local building codes and installation methods.

How the calculator works
Area: length × width
Board courses: cross-deck dimension ÷ (actual board width + gap)
Boards per course: board-span dimension ÷ board length
Waste-adjusted boards: ceil(raw boards × (1 + waste %))
Joists: ceil(board-span dimension ÷ spacing) + 1 boundary joist
Board direction controls which deck dimension is covered by each board and which dimension is used for the joist estimate. The joist count is a planning estimate, not structural advice.

Waste covers cut ends, damaged pieces, mistakes and offcuts that are too short or awkward to reuse. A simple rectangular deck often has less waste than a layout with angles, picture-frame borders, stairs or multiple patterns.

How many deck boards do I need?

How do I calculate deck square footage?
Multiply the finished deck length by its finished width in feet. For example, a 16 ft × 12 ft deck has 192 square feet.
How much waste should I add for decking?
Around 5–10% is a reasonable starting point for a simple rectangular layout. More cuts, angles, picture-frame borders or complex patterns can require more. Use the waste setting as an estimating allowance, not a construction rule.
How wide is a standard deck board?
A nominal 6-inch deck board is commonly around 5.5 inches actual width, but actual dimensions vary by material and manufacturer. Use the measured or published actual width when possible.
How many deck boards do I need for a 12×16 deck?
With 5.5-inch-wide boards, a 1/8-inch gap, 12-foot boards running along the 16-foot length, and 10% waste, this calculator estimates 58 boards. Change the board length or direction and the estimate will update.
Should deck board gaps be included in the calculation?
Yes. The calculator adds the selected gap to the actual board width when estimating how many courses cover the deck. That avoids treating the gap as usable board width.
How do I estimate deck material cost?
Enter the price per board. The calculator multiplies that price by the waste-adjusted board count and shows an approximate decking material cost. It does not include framing, fasteners, stairs, railings, labor, tax or delivery.
